Common Land Rover 2.0 Ingenium Engine Failures
The Land Rover 2.0 Ingenium diesel engines most common faults are:
204DTD – Range Rover Evoque, Land Rover Discovery Sport | 204DTA – Discovery 5, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Velar

Turbocharger Failure
The turbocharger itself on all diesel Ingenium engines is composed of components and materials that are seemingly not sufficient for its purpose. We commonly find vehicles with failed turbochargers, either as a result of engine failure or the direct cause of engine failure.
Consequence
A common consequence of a failed turbocharger is bent conrods. Excessive oil through the intake causes the engine to hydro-lock. This compresses fluid in the cylinder, which bends conrods – evident by pistons no longer protruding at TDC.

Poor Maintenance
Engine failure can result if an engine is not properly taken care of. Neglecting regular oil changes is a common cause with the Ingenium engine, as it leads to blocked oil galleries and loss of lubrication.
Consequence
Without correct oil changes, carbon, timing debris and sludge builds up. This blocks the oil pickup and galleries, causing spun bearings and other cascading failures including turbocharger issues.

Timing Failure
Timing chain stretch and plastic guide failure is common. Components wear and drop debris into the oil pickup, starving the engine of oil. This causes timing chain rattling and engine noise.
Consequence
Debris blocks oil pickup causing spun bearings and turbocharger issues. Other damage includes valves, tappets, rocker arms and more.

Fuel Injector Failure
Injectors tend to over-fuel, injecting too much fuel and causing high cylinder temps. The pistons are made of weak material and are very susceptible to damage.
Consequence
Over-fuelling melts the piston crown, causing loss of compression and cylinder liner damage. Often results in a knocking sound or cracked piston components.
Applicable Engine Codes
These are the most common engine codes used across the Land Rover and Jaguar 2.0 Ingenium family, both petrol and diesel variants:
- ✓204DTD – Range Rover Evoque, Discovery Sport (2.0 L diesel)
- ✓204DTA – Discovery 5, Range Rover Sport, Velar (2.0 L diesel)
- ✓AJ200D – Jaguar XF, XE, F-Pace (Ingenium 2.0 diesel)
- ✓AJ200P – Jaguar E-Pace, Evoque (2.0 L petrol Ingenium)
- ✓PT204 – Petrol Ingenium variant in newer Land Rover models
- ✓DT204 – Alternate designation for 204DTD in technical docs
